There was never any question that the David Jones Spring Summer collections launch would be full of head-turning fashion, but one young star has really raised eyebrows with his bold fashion choice.

While the fun styles are usually the domain of women, while the men mill about in variations on the traditional suit, Christian Wilkins, son of Today host Richard Wilkins, threw caution to the wind as he stepped out in a daring sheer lace blouse and knee-length skirt combo at the launch.

As though daring anyone to question the choice, he captioned a photo of himself he posted to Instagram, confidently staring down the camera at the show, with “Masculinity.”

The 22-year-old appears to have inherited his love of style and grooming from his dad, who is notoriously precious about his full head of hair, and stood proudly by his bold son’s side at the VIP dinner event for 300 people at David Jones’ Elizabeth Street, Melbourne store.

Wilkins, who calls himself “The Prince” joked on Instagram that he’d “skipped lunch” to ensure he looked good on the night.

On social media, most people were supportive and applauded Wilkins’ look, while others were unconvinced.

“She’s pretty but far too young for him,” one commenter said on the photo of the father and son together.

He recently appeared on the SBS documentary Filthy Rich and Homeless, where five privileged people lived rough in Melbourne for 10 days, an experience which opened Wilkins’ eyes to the plight of the homeless.

“It was definitely scary,” he told News Corp.

“The first night before I went to sleep I asked for a bit of money and I got told I was scum and should get a job.

“Something you quickly realise is that even though you’re in the middle of the city, it is incredibly lonely and incredibly isolating.”

Wilkins works full-time as a social media producer at Channel 9
