Melania Trump and Brigitte Macron lead first lady fashion pack in Argentina

When it comes to fashion-forward first ladies, it’s hard to go past Melania Trump and Brigitte Macron.

The two first ladies touched down in Argentina on Friday with their husbands who are in Buenos Aires for the G20 summit.

It was the first time the two women have met overseas since their husbands exchanged a series of terse words in November after French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea of creating a European army to counter international threats from Russia, China and even the United States.

The spat didn’t appear to have affected Melania and Brigitte’s relationship in front of the cameras on Friday though, with the pair posing happily together in a group photo with 11 other first ladies from countries participating in the G20 summit.

The women gathered for a group photo at Villa Ocampo in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, with Melania standing tall in the front row alongside Argentinian first lady Juliana Awada.

The US first lady sported a striking pair of green heels for the occasion and paired them with a lovely floral dress with green trim.

Earlier in the day, she was greeted by Argentinian first lady Juliana, who looked equally stunning in a long white Grecian-style dress.

The two women took a short walk through the grounds at Villa Ocampo before meeting the other first ladies.

Brigitte, meanwhile, spent a busy morning out with her husband greeting locals and visiting Remembrance Park — a monument on the banks of the Rio de la Plata in memory of the 30,000 people who disappeared or were killed under the 1976-1983 military regime in Argentina.

She sported her favoured style of dress for the occasion, stepping out in a blue shift dress that finished just above the knee.

The G20 summit is the first time the US and French presidents have met face-to-face overseas since their brief spat in France over Macron’s European army comments in November.

Just minutes after touching down in Paris on November 10, Trump tweeted his anger at Macron who’d earlier told a radio program he supported the idea for an army to defend Europe’s borders from aggressors.

“President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the U.S., China and Russia,” Trump tweeted. “Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly!”

Macron had told reporters Trump’s plans to pull the US out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear forces treaty with Russia was cause for Europe to put more focus on protecting its own security interests.

“We need a Europe which defends itself better alone, without just depending on the United States, in a more sovereign matter,” Macron said.

Following Trump’s outburst, ABC News reports the pair smoothed things over in a private meeting and a press conference in which Macron supported Trump’s calls for European countries to shoulder more of the fundings costs for Nato.

“We do share views that we need much better European burden sharing in NATO, in order to take our part of the burden,” Macron said.

Trump appeared pleased by the comment and responded: “I very much appreciate what you’re saying about burden sharing, we want a very strong Europe.”
