Over 50 and still in the mood for sex?

Apr 04, 2014

Australia’s first online community for discussion on ‘better sexual health in people aged over 50’ launched this week on Facebook.  And we’re pleased to share with you that they are friends of Starts at 60, and will join us for conversations from time to time.

The Facebook page  called “In the Mood” Click here to visit  is designed to encourage more open discussion on the joys of sex or issues with sex, whether you’re in your 50’s or older.

It’s an opportunity to hear and share people’s views on the topic in a safe environment, moderated by a professional organisation.

The forum was an initiative by the founders of Evergreen, a consultancy that specialises in ageing. After years of listening to Boomers and Seniors in focus groups saying they were tired of being ignored by marketers, especially when it came to sex and relationships, Evergreen knew something had to be done.

CEO of Impotence Australia, Brett McCann, says “It is refreshing to have an organisation spearheading the value and importance of sexual relationships for older people. Sex doesn’t have to stop when you are over 50. In fact our specialist sexual health doctors are seeing a steady increase in older patients wanting more information on having a rewarding and satisfied sex life with no age limit.”

As we age, health and relationships remain important but are often complicated by life-changing events such as health scares (for example, issues with prostate ,impotence, diabetes, general libido), retirement or perhaps a change in relationship status;  many of these factors add pressure to our well-being and sexual functioning. Seeking professional help from a specialist service, such as Impotence Australia is encouraged, as they are able to explain the physical changes that are occurring.

Older people need to overcome their fears or embarrassment to discuss sexual health. If you had trouble with mobility, hearing or your eyesight was deteriorating, you wouldn’t say “Oh well, I’m over the hill so that’s my lot”.

The same sexual positions which were once used may no longer be so easily accessible. Finding creative new ways to spice up your sex life may be an important part of enhancing life as we age. To this end, the Facebook community has supported the development of a fact sheet called ‘Positions for Comfy Sex’.

The ‘Positions for Comfy Sex’ guide is free to download and has been sponsored by www.impotenceaustralia.com.au or www.inthemoodstore.com.au.

Why not take a look.  But tell us today – is sex something you think you would like and discuss on Facebook?
