How to add a touch of fun to your fashion with pom poms

You can easily make your own versions of this fashion trend.

Pom poms are great fun for kids, but they are something for adults too. If you are looking for a playful addition to your wardrobe then look no further.

These little balls of fluff can actually add a fun element to a number of items in your wardrobe. It’s an easy way to brighten up or colour co-ordinate your clothing, not to mention make an older item look new and on-trend.

They can be a fun accessory piece. Try adding one to a strip of material or cord to tie around your neckline or wrist.

A couple sewn on to a casual handbag or basket can add a fun feel to a basic item.

If you want to add a fun effect to an old outfit why not add a trim of pompoms to your hemline; trousers, skirts, tops; whatever you like.

If that idea is not enough why not try a fun look on your favourite jumper.

Did you ever think to add them to your shoes? A simple trim around the edges, or even a simple solo pom attached to a pair of sandals.

What’s the best part of the pompom trend? You can make your very own with these instructions:

What you need

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Yarn

What to do

  1. Cut out two cardboard circles the size of the pompom you want.
  2. Cut out a wedge and a small hole in the middle of each circle.
  3. Place a piece of yarn between the two cardboard circles to secure later.
  4. Line the circles together.
  5. Wind the yarn around the circles until it is as thick as you want.
  6. Slowly cut the yarn around the outer edges of the circles (cutting between the two pieces of cardboard).
  7. Tie and knot the ends of the first piece of yarn you placed in the cardboard, to hold the pom pom together.
  8. Remove the cardboard. If you are careful you will be able to use it again.
  9. Trim any excess pieces of pom pom.
  10. Now attach it to your project and start the next one.

What have you used pom poms for?
