This song 1972 hit is still considered as one of Roberta Flack’s best. It first appeared on her albums in 1969 but wasn’t released as a single until three years’ later.

Luckily, despite taking its time to get on the charts, it went straight to number one on the Billboard charts and became one of her most well-known songs.

It has since been covered by hundreds of other artists including Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Don McLean, George Michael, Bobby Vinton, Jennifer Hudson, Johnny Cash, Kate Ceberano, Petula Clarke and The Temptations, proving it is one of the most timeless songs in history.

“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” was originally a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who would later become his wife. At the time the couple were lovers, although MacColl was married to someone else!
