Dancing the night away

Nov 08, 2013

It’s easy to see that dancers are a “pretty healthy” lot! Even enduring the odd tumble or fall does not deter them and sure as eggs, they are back for more!

The valuable exercise that one gets from dancing is so obvious. It is a medical fact that gentle exercise has benefits that outweigh our expectations including swimming, yoga and walking. Dancing is gentle but consistent, it makes one think, and it exercises the mind. Concentrating on learning new routines is a welcome challenge and even has a competitive edge to see ‘who’ learns the next routine the quickest!

Dancing brings your heart rate up in more ways than one, husbands and wife’s, boyfriends and girlfriends, singles and, or perhaps just a dance partner come together and experience a fun activity that as enormous health benefits. Cardio, muscular, brain, all simultaneously working together for the most benefit.

Dancing is a great social outlet, meeting fellow people that have the same love of it and enjoy the social interaction, often leading to hmmm; let’s say “friendly” liaisons. Long lasting friendships that keep on giving all through the eyes of dance or should I say, through the feet!

It appears to me that it also gives one purpose, something to look forward to, meeting friends, hearing the beautiful music, sharing each others stories over coffee and tea breaks, listening and laughing over past and present lives.

Dancing isn’t just for the young or for the experienced. Ok, you don’t have to be Dancing with the Stars experts, but hey, wasn’t Tony Barber on it?

There are many venues that cater for New Vogue Sequence and Old Time Dancing, check your local papers, Senior Citizen Halls and local Clubs or contact me. It’s out there for you to participate, learn and enjoy all the health benefits of dance. I am immensely impressed and it SHOWS just how good it is for you. Dancers are generally fit and thriving with an activity that is centuries old, yet so popular with our Senior generation.

Tony and I often talk about what a great activity it is – if only we had time do it! One thing I have learnt as I have approached my senior years is – make every moment count – Fun, Fitness and Friendship, what’s to lose? Get a dance partner and have a go! Next month, let’s chat about “how to keep your cardio vascular system in rhythm”.

And tell me – Do you dance?  What kind of dance?
