A painful headache can take the gloss off your whole day, and if you have them frequently, it can feel like you’re popping painkillers all the time.

There are two main types of headache – primary, which often comes on for no apparent reason, and secondary, which is caused by an underlying health reason. A headache can occur if you’re dehydrated, sleep deprived, stressed or suffering tension in a muscle, and if you suffer from them often or the pain is extreme, its advisable to see your doctor.

But if you only get a headache occasionally and would rather not take a painkiller, these natural home remedies are definitely worth a try.

Cinnamon

Widely known as one of the healthiest and delicious spices, cinnamon can effectively treat a headache. All you need to do is grind cinnamon sticks into a powder and add water to create a thick paste. Apply to your forehead and temples, and wash off after 30 minutes.

Lavender oil

Not only does lavender oil have a beautiful scent, it’s also a great way to relieve headache pain. Add two drops of lavender oil to two cups of boiled water and inhale the steam. Why? Simply smelling the fragrance can soothe the pain.

Thyme

Thyme has been proven to be a great way to decrease a headache. To relieve pain dab a drop or two of thyme on each temple of your forehead. Rub gently into the skin, and wait for a few minutes for it to kick in.

Basil

This strong-scented herb works as a muscle relaxant and helps ease a headache caused by tension or tight muscles. Try putting three to four fresh basil leaves into a cup of boiling water and leave to simmer. Add a little honey and drink the liquid. Honey is also proven to be a superpower remedy that can strengthen the immune system.

Apple

Both apple and apple cider vinegar can be used to fight off headaches. How? They help restore the acid-alkaline balance in the body. If you wake up with a headache, eat an apple sprinkled in salt, as salt in moderation also offers a variety of health benefits including sustaining hydration levels.

Have you used any of these remedies before? What do you use to soothe a headache?
