We’ve been told this method of cooking can be deadly, now scientists say they got it all wrong

After years of being told frying food will rot your arteries scientists are admitting they may have got it all wrong. Contrary to the popular belief that boiling or steaming vegetables is the healthiest method of cooking, experts now say lightly frying veggies in extra virgin olive oil is better for your body.

The idea hails back to the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in olive oil and vegetables, and has seen a surge in popularity in recent years thanks to it’s balanced approach to eating.

The Spanish scientists who worked on the cooking experiment say lightly frying veggies helps release antioxidants, which increases the health benefits of the veggies and can help prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration.

So does this mean we can finally stop eating bland boiled vegetables every night? If these experts have anything to do with it, yes we can! The scientists are not alone in their belief that eating more like the Mediterraneans is the key to a healthier life.

The regional diet consists of lots of veggies like tomatoes, eggplant, capsicum, and cucumber, as well as a good dose of grains, seeds and legumes. They use seafood as their main source of protein and limit themselves to just a little dairy and red meat. And let’s not forget the olive oil. They use minimal butter, unlike many westernised diets, and focus on drawing out flavour in their food with the subtle oil.

So it looks like you can finally get rid of that veggie steamer for good!

Are you surprised by these new results? Would you try the Mediterranean diet?
