Avoid the embarrassment of ill-fitting teeth

Enjoy a juicy steak without worrying!

There’s no denying that dentures can take some getting used to.

One of the most common fears for people who are new to wearing dentures is that their false teeth will become dislodged while eating or fall out of their mouth mid-conversation.

Even those who have had dentures for years will still be able to understand the worry that comes with biting into a big, juicy piece of steak and wondering if your teeth are going to follow the fork out of your mouth.

Your dentist will fit your dentures as accurately as possible to your mouth, but sometimes a little extra assistance is needed to keep things in place and help prevent food getting stuck in between the denture and your gums.

The solution for most people is denture adhesive cream.

If applied correctly, adhesive can secure your false teeth in place while comfortably cushioning your gums.

Certain adhesives, such as those made by Polident, will last for up to 12 hours with just one use, meaning you can enjoy an entire day without having to worry about a mishap.

There are certain steps you should follow, though, when applying adhesive to ensure your teeth are properly sealed to your gums.

Following the instructions on the adhesive packaging, clean and dry your dentures, then apply the adhesive in short strips along the denture where it meets your gums, ensuring you don’t go too close to the edge.

Rinse your mouth with water, before inserting denture, then press the dentures firmly in place, biting down for a few seconds to secure the hold.

The saliva in your mouth will help the adhesive expand to fill the gaps between your gums and the denture and create a seal, so that food can’t get underneath and irritate your gums.

At the end of the day, you can remove your dentures by swirling warm water in your mouth, then rocking your dentures back and forth to loosen the adhesive. Remove any adhesive residue from your mouth and the denture with warm water.

Using good-quality adhesive and the correct cleaning product is an important part of caring for your dentures, which prolongs their life.
