Vegemite and cheese sausage rolls

It’s hard to go past a good old-fashioned sausage rolls. This version is admittedly a little different to the traditional kind, but it’s so darned tasty you’ll be temped to ditch the old for the new every time you make them.  This delicious sausage roll is packed with pork chipolata, cheese and everyone’s favourite Aussie ingredient — Vegemite.

It’s dead easy to make and is a great snack to serve up to the grandkids when they come to visit, or to enjoy on your own for dinner with a side of veg. This version calls for pork chipolatas, but you can use beef if you prefer. Serve hot out of the oven, dunk into tomato sauce and dig in! 

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, just thawed
  • 2 tbsp Vegemite
  • 12 pork chipolatas
  • 160g coarsely grated cheese
  •  1 egg, lightly whisked
  • Poppy seeds, to sprinkle

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 220°C. Line two large baking trays with baking paper.
  2. Cut each pastry sheet in half. Spread with Vegemite, leaving a 1cm boarder along a long side of each piece
  3. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the Vegemite. Prick chipolatas a few times with a fork. 
  4. Cut each piece of pastry crossways into three equal portions.
  5. Place a chipolata on each portion, along the edge opposite the boarder.
  6. Roll up to enclose and place, seam side down, on the prepared trays.
  7. Brush the top or each roll with egg. Sprinkle with poppy seeds.
  8. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
