It was one of the biggest movies of the 1980s and has continued to wow fans ever since – and now Footloose has brought together a school full of students and some lively nursing home residents in an incredible video.

Teenagers from FCJ College Benalla teamed up with residents from Cooinda Benalla Aged Care to recreate some of the most memorable highlights of the movie, showing off some impressive dance moves while lip syncing along to the famous lyrics.

The video, shared by the college on social media, has since gone viral as people of all ages react to the amazing effort.

Describing how it all came about on Sunrise on Monday, the school’s principal Joanne Rock told host Kochie: “This is part of a wellbeing project that the college runs with Cooinda. We’ve been doing it for eight years and over the last three years as a bit of extra fun we thought we’d shoot a little video clip at the end of it to celebrate all their hard work.

“This one seems to have caught the imagination of many and has gone really quite viral!”

Student Kelly James, who features heavily in the video, added on the morning show: “It was great dancing and singing with all the residents of Cooinda.”

As part of the program, the students go once a week for eight weeks to meet the residents, chat and sing with them and have fun together.

The video features some of the home’s residents miming the lyrics in their mobility scooters, while a group of women laugh and sing together while sewing. Meanwhile, some of the students show off some amazing dance moves and stunts before they all come together at the end on the dance floor – wearing costumes reminiscent of the ’80s.

Parents, friends and social media users from across the country rushed to congratulate the team, with one writing: “Fantastic FJC and Cooinda …. a harmonious and much loved match made in life and in heaven!! What a wonderful project for the young and the young at heart. Hats off to you all.”

Another added: “This is fantastic. A great way to connect young with the aged. Everyone looks as though they are having so much fun,” and one wrote: “That is just fabulous! Had a smile on my face the whole time I was watching it. Well done to all – awesome job.”

Every year the college signs students up for the eight-week Let’s Find Our Voice choir initiative, teaming up with the nursing home to laugh, chat and sing together. Last year they ended the project with another amazing lip-sync video, this time to Queen’s hit ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’.

What do you think of the video? Is it good to see youngsters and oldies joining forces like this on a shared passion?
