Sir Tom Jones has been forced to cancel further shows on his tour after checking into hospital with a bacterial infection.

The 78-year-old earlier this week informed fans he wouldn’t be able to perform due to an illness, however, this new statement has given more insight into his current condition.

Taking to Instagram to share the unfortunate news, the popular Welsh singer said two more of his much-anticipated shows in Germany and the United Kingdom were no longer going ahead.

“Sir Tom has a bacterial infection for which he is being treated in hospital. The condition is being well managed and under doctors orders, appropriate recovery time and rest is advised,” the post read.

“Sir Tom is in good spirits and wants to extend both his heartfelt appreciation and his sincere apologies to all who planned to attend the shows, as well as those involved in the events.

“He is determined to be back performing very soon.”

Ticket holders were also informed they would receive a refund, however, most were just concerned for the singer’s health, sending him messages of support.

“Unfortunately, I think it’s time for our lovely sir Tom to retire and rest, he is not young anymore, and I think a true fan would agree and rather see him alive and well, then singing and one day gone! Praying for you dear Mr Jones,” one fan commented.

“Omg is he okay? This sounds so serious. Please tell him we love him so much and are praying for his quick recovery,” another added.

While the 78-year-old remains determined to take to the stage, this is the second time Jones has had to pull out of a tour.

Last year the much-loved performer cancelled his tour just five days before it was due to start, later informing fans it was due to a hip replacement.

The rocker had originally thought it was his sciatic nerve causing him trouble until the pain got so bad that the singer was struggling to get on and off stage at his concerts.

It wasn’t until he was in London preparing for the tour that he underwent further tests that revealed the extent of his condition.
