Elton John: 70 sounded like the end of the world

Elton John is still keen to keep performing.

He might have turned 70 yesterday but there is no sign Elton John is ready to slow down.

Instead the superstar celebrated in style with a star studded gala bash in Los Angeles.

“Some people don’t like birthdays, they don’t like celebrating, they don’t want to know about them, and I’ve always enjoyed my birthday,” he told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe ahead of the big bash held last night.

While he once thought the age of 70 sounded archaic Elton said he is now ready to embrace it.

“When I was growing up, 70 sounded like the end of the world,” Elton said.

“But things have changed – you’re as old as you feel inside.”

The special birthday event, with celebs like Heidi Klum and Katy Perry (below) attending, was also a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation And the UCLA Hammer Museum.

Elton is taking this weekend’s event as not only as a celebration of turning 70, but of 50 years of partnership with collaborator Bernie Taupin (below).

“It’s a great year this year, it’s the 25th anniversary of the AIDS foundation, 50 years of Bernie and me, and 70 years of me. It’s nice to celebrate things. Life is fabulous, life is fantastic.”

Many Australians are celebrating the fact that Elton John and his band will be touring here with four shows this year.

“I always love coming back to Australia,” Elton John said.

“It holds a very special place in my heart, ever since my first visit there at the start of my world-wide career in 1971.”

“My band and I are really looking forward to playing there again in September and this tour will be even more memorable because it will be the first time I have ever played Mackay and Cairns… which I can’t believe, but there you have it.”

Wollongong and Hobart are also part of the tour itinerary.
