A grandmother has been hailed a hero after she bravely chased an intruder out of her home before confronting them in the street.

Antionetta, 84, was filmed standing over the female intruder who was bent down on the floor appearing to go through a bag, after she allegedly stole the grandmother of six’ keys and phone – which was full of treasured photos of her grandkids.

A video, published by 7 News, shows North Melbourne’s Antionetta refusing to back down before a man appears alongside the female intruder.

Describing what happened to the news outlet, the daring gran revealed she was watching TV when she saw a shadow and realised someone had broken into her home.

She reportedly immediately ran after the woman down the street before cornering her, where it’s alleged her male accomplice joined her and they ran away together.

“I rush… I chase her and outside she stopped. I realised there was a man…” Antionetta said.

“I was very emotional,” the shaken woman admitted, before offering some stern words to the youngsters, adding: “You’re young. What do you do this for? Why couldn’t you go back to work?”

She said she’s determined not to give up her freedom now, despite fears the woman will return – having got hold of her key. She insisted: “I will not give it [my freedom] up.”

It comes just months after a Sydney grandmother was labelled a hero for attempting to save her five-year-old grandson from a brutal stabbing attack in the city’s north-west in June.

Local Area Commander Superintendent Robert Critchlow confirmed to reporters at the time that the boy was stabbed by a male relative and described the attack as a “horrible and brutal” crime. They said the boy’s 60-year-old grandmother fled from a home in Pauls Place, where the stabbing took place, bravely carrying her injured grandson to nearby Moseley Street and raising the alarm to neighbours.

Sadly, the young boy could not be saved despite his grandmother’s best efforts and died less than an hour later at Westmead Children’s Hospital.

The brave woman was praised for her efforts with Critchlow describing her as “heroic”.

She’s behaved in a heroic and caring manner, as you would imagine a grandmother would,” Critchlow said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “She’s been presented with something terrible, and done her best to get the young boy to safety and to get him treatment.

“Sadly, despite her best efforts, there was nothing more she could have done. We’re grateful to her for what she did do at the scene. She’s physically uninjured at this point which we’re pleased about. She’s also assisting our investigation.”

Police said the boy was “gravely injured” in the attack and described the level of violence as “horrendous” and “as bad as it gets”.

What do you think? Did the gran do the right thing?
