Entire NSW RSL council stands down as police investigate

A scandal has erupted in the NSW RSL.

A financial scandal has rocked the New South Wales RSL, with the entire council stepping aside while police investigate.

Last year, claims emerged against some of the leagues top members, with reports over rabid overspending and misusing of funds.

Now, the ABC is reporting police, the charities watchdog, and an independent audit firm, and other bodies have launched official investigations over several alleged financial scandals.

The former NSW president Don Rowe is under fire for spending $475,000 on his corporate credit card over six years and making $213,000 in cash withdrawals.

He stepped down in late 2014 telling people it was for health reasons, but it is now being claimed it was because he was threatened with a forensic audit.

There are also allegations that several directors of the League’s aged care wing were paid millions of dollars while sitting on the board.

The revelations come as a blow to RSL supporters right around the country, with many donating their hard-earned money to the league over the years.

The RSL was once a thriving part of social life and the community, but has become less popular with the younger generation over the years.

With the League relying so heavily on donations and goodwill, the allegations are a let down for many who rely on its services.

Do you think the RSL is still an important part of the community? Should more be done to help it?
