Staying friends with a former partner can be a challenge for some, especially when you add kids into the equation, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem for singing legend Sir Rod Stewart as he posed with his current wife Penny Lancaster and three of his previous partners, all of whom he’s fathered children with, this week.

Though it may seem strange to some, with many people avoiding even phone conversations with their ex or deliberately crossing the street to save having to exchange niceties, the group appeared in good spirits as they joined together to celebrate the 40th birthday of one of Rod’s daughters. The singer has eight children in total to five different women and, if this picture is anything to go by, the majority are apparently still quite friendly with one another.

Rod took prime position in the photo, as he stood happily alongside current wife Penny Lancaster, former girlfriend and model Kelly Emberg, second wife Rachel Hunter and his first wife Alana Stewart. You’d think there would be some awkwardness in the snap but all seemed happy to be there together with big smiles spread across their faces.

The five were even seen linking arms around one another with clearly no tension between the group – far from the typical scenes expected ex-lovers are forced together in one room. The happy photo was shared on social media by Kelly as she wished Kimberly Stewart a happy 40th birthday.

In the post on Instagram she wrote: “#happybirthday @thekimberlystewart! Can’t believe you are 40! You looked radiant last night! You looked radiant last night! #birthdaybash. A mother’s reunion!” Fans were quick to comment on the happy snap with many claiming how lovely it was to see them all together for the special occasion.

“How lovely to see all you all together being mum, wives and grandmothers, just great,” one person commented on Instagram. Another wrote: “What an amazing family you all are.” While a third said: “That’s quite a reunion!”

Staying friends with exes is probably not the norm with most choosing to bid farewell to their previous partners once the relationship has ended. Even in the best of cases jealousy can cause tension when one person meets someone new, not to mention the addition of kids which can make the situation more complicated.

But for Rod things appear to be going swimmingly, with even all of his children seeming to get along quite well. Earlier this year five of them jetted away for a holiday together in Palm Beach, Florida, with Penny taking to social media to share a gorgeous image of the fam hanging out.

The beautiful family photo featured the couple, along with five of Rod’s children cuddled up on a couch. It was simply captioned: “Family holiday time but sadly there is always one or two missing @renee_stewartt @rubystewart.” The famous couple can be seen smiling along with Rod’s daughter Kimberly and son Sean, whom he shares with ex-wife Alana. Also joining them on the holiday was Rod’s son with Rachel Hunter, Liam, and his two youngest sons with wife Penny Alastair and Aiden.

The post received plenty of attention from fans who left a flurry of loving comments for the gorgeous family. “What a happy and beautiful family. You are blessed,” one person wrote on the post. “You are the most beautiful family,” another commented. While a third said: “Now that’s one good looking family!”
