‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ singer-songwriter Bill Withers dies, aged 81

Bill Withers, the American singer who wrote timeless hits like ‘Lean on Me’, ‘Lovely Day’ and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ has died. He was 81 years old.

The three-time Grammy Award winner died on Monday (local time) in Los Angeles from heart complications, according to a statement from his family.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” the statement from his family said. “A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other.

“As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”

Fans and those who knew him took to social media to express their grief. Rocker Lenny Kravitz was among those paying tribute, writing: “Rest in power Bill Withers. Your voice, songs, and total expression gave us love, hope, and strength. My soul always has and always will be full of your music. Your humility displayed and depth of your power as you carried us all to a better place. You’re still and always will be Bill.”

Singer-songwriter John Legend wrote: “Mourning the loss of my friend and inspiration, Bill Withers. He was such an incredible songwriter and storyteller. I’m so glad he shared his gift with the world. Life wouldn’t be the same without him.”

“RIP THE GREAT BILL WITHERS! YOUR LEGACY WILL NEVER DIE!” one devoted fan wrote.

Another added: “It was always a comforting sight to see Bill Withers with his guitar, and even more of a blessing to witness his talent. Rest in peace to an icon — we’ll forever be thankful for the timeless music that’ll define past, present, and future generations.”

While a third wrote: “Thank you for sharing your light with the world #BillWithers.”

Withers’ first album Just As I Am was released in 1971 and included the single ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, which won him the first of three Grammy Awards. Withers’ songs ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ and ‘Lean on Me’ are among Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia, and children, Todd and Kori.
