Queensland police are investigating the tragic death of a baby girl at a popular Gold Coast beach overnight.

Police and paramedics were called to Staghorn Avenue, the Esplanade, at about 12.30am on Monday morning to attend to a young girl who was unresponsive on Surfers Paradise beach.

Emergency Services officers conducted CPR at the scene, however, they were unable to save the baby girl and she was declared deceased at the scene.

Nine News reports a member of the public found the girl and alerted emergency services and that two people are helping police with their investigations.

Detectives have offered little detail on the circumstances surrounding the incident, but said a crime scene has been declared as they work to determine the cause of the girl’s death and to confirm her identity.

Surfers Paradise is one of the Gold Coast’s most popular tourist spots and is often teeming with late-night revellers during the summer.

The tragic incident comes as the Gold Coast prepares for one of its busiest weeks of the year, with thousands of school leavers expected to descend upon its sands on Monday to mark the beginning of Schoolies Week.

According to the ABC, police have confirmed the little girl’s death is “not schoolies related at all”.
