Crown Princess Mary of Denmark kicked off her high heels and laced up her running shoes this week as she joined the annual Danish Royal Run.

Alongside her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, the Tassie-bown Princess showed off her sporty side at the annual fitness event, running across various cities in Denmark.

Princess Mary was seen participating in two of the day’s events. Donning a pair of navy blue leggings and her Royal Run t-shirt, the Princess and her four children competed in Copenhagen’s one-mile run before going solo in the five-kilometre walk in the nearby town of Nykøbing Falster.

“It was actually a wonderful experience,” Mary told Danish television network TV 2.

“I’ve run it many times now so it’s great to try [something new] and see how it goes. It was a pleasure, you experience it in a completely different way.”

The Royal Run started in 2018 to mark Frederik’s 50th birthday. This year’s event was hosted just days after the future King’s 55th on May 26.

Frederik also partook in several different races throughout the day. The Prince kickstarted the day at the one-mile race in Aabenraa before tackling the five-kilometre run in Herning and then meeting his sons Prince Christian, 17, and Prince Vincent, 12, in Copenhagen to compete at the 10-kilometre run.

Earlier in the day Prince Vincent and Prince Christian joined sisters Princess Isabella, 15, and Princess Josephine, 12, at another race held in Copenhagen marking the first time the royal children took part in the royal race without their parents.

Taking to social media, Frederik expressed his gratitude for the event’s high turnout.

“It is a great pleasure to have my whole family with me on a day like today, and it means an incredible amount to us that so many Danes have taken part in the Royal Run,” he wrote.

“Today has been a day of celebration, and my family and I are ready again next year.”

The Danish Royal Family are known for their love of sports, with Mary and Frederik often having friendly competitions against one another.

Last year, Princess Mary dominated her husband in a riveting sailing race at the Rockwool Denmark Sailing GrandPrix.

Mary was totally at home on the water as she got behind the F50’s wheel and manoeuvred her team to victory, beating her husband and team Denmark on the chilly waters of Oresund in Copenhagen.
