Though Queen Elizabeth II has passed on, her grandson Prince William continues to embody her sense of duty to both country and the crown.

But there’s another reason the late Queen would be impressed by her grandson as he steps up as Prince of Wales and slowly transforms the monarchy.

That’s the take from author and royal reporter Jennie Bond who spoke to OK! magazine about the way the 42-year-old Prince is adapting the House of Windsor for the modern age.

“For a while now, William has been putting into action the way that he intends to do the job,” Bond told the publication.

“And that, as he now made clear, is royal with a small ‘r.’ You could say that the small ‘r’ also stands for relatable, because that is what he is showing himself to be.”

The former BBC royal reporter also thought the down-to-earth prince enjoyed more opportunities to interact with the public in less formal settings.

“I think he gets quite a kick out of surprising people, by taking calls in a restaurant, serving people from burger stalls, or dropping into a pub to buy a round of drinks,” Bond said.

Bond added that the future king “finds it refreshing to be able to interact without all the fuss that generally goes with a royal visit,” noting that his new approach is also “extremely effective” from a PR point of view.”

The journalist and television presenter explained that this was the best path for the British royals as they adapt to the needs of their public.

“I think by deliberately cutting down on the need for deference, William is finding a clearer path to understanding public opinion,” Bond said.

“And I think his late grandmother would very much approve.”

So far, this approach seems to be working as a recent poll has shown Prince William and his wife Princess Catherine are the most popular royals.

In fact the beloved Princess Catherine has secured the title of most popular royal in a recent Ipsos poll that found that 66 per cent of Britons hold a favourable view of the Princess of Wales.

Catherine’s husband, Prince William, followed closely behind in the popularity stakes with 65 per cent holding a favourable view of the future king.

Princess Anne ranked third with a 62 per cent approval rating, while her brother, King Charles, followed with 56 per cent.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle lagged in popularity, holding a lower favourable rating of 28 per cent and 21 per cent respectively.
