Bohemian Rhapsody rings out at the palace in honour of Golden Globes win

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody beat off stiff competition to take home the gong for Best Picture at Monday night’s Golden Globes awards ceremony, and now the British royal family have paid tribute to the stars of the film in a very special way.

The instantly recognisable tune of Queen mega-hit ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ rang out from Buckingham Palace on Tuesday in honour of the film scooping two prizes on the night.

The movie won the award for Best Drama Motion Picture, while Rami Malek won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Footage of the performance was captured by a number of tourists and shared online, showing the Queen’s Royal Guards belting out an instrumental version of the popular track, as people in the crowd can be heard singing along.

Malek heaped praise on Mercury – who was born Farrokh Bulsara – on stage as he collected his first ever Golden Globe on Monday, receiving a rousing applause from the crowd as he dedicated the gong to the much-loved singer and his bandmates.

“Oh my god, I am beyond moved,” he said as he took to the stage. “My heart is pounding out of my chest. This is a profound honour to be counted among such extraordinary actors, I am privileged.”

He added: “Of course, to Queen. To you Brian May, to you Roger Taylor, for ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exists in the music and in the world and in all of us.

“Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous!”

They are also reported to have played the Game of Thrones theme song in honour of the show’s former star Richard Madden, who also won big at the Golden Globes thanks to his role in recent BBC drama The Bodyguard.

And it’s far from the first time that the Queen’s guards have swapped traditional music for something a little more modern though as last year they entertained the crowds with a rendition of ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ in honour of the release of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!
