As the 27th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death approaches, an upcoming documentary series will delve into the circumstances surrounding her untimely passing

Princess Diana sadly died on August 31, 1997, following a tragic car accident in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. The crash, which also claimed the lives of her companion Dodi Al Fayed and driver Henri Paul, sent shockwaves across the globe.

The documentary series Who Killed Diana?, produced by the team behind Netflix’s Depp vs. Heard and The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe, will explore the events leading up to Diana’s death in a three-part investigation.

Director Emma Cooper told Deadline she was passionate about exploring iconic women through the lens of an investigative documentary series.

“Just as we did with The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe, we’ve taken a story the world thought it knew and uncovered hidden truths,” she said.

“I am committed to approaching this beloved and iconic woman’s story with fresh perspectives, new voices, and previously untold information.”

While Diana’s death occurred almost three decades ago, the tragic moment in history still lingers in the memory of all those who adored her. Yet, one person continues to be deeply haunted by her passing.

Dr Frederic Mailliez was driving home after a party on the night of the accident when the sight of the smoking Mercedes caught his attention.

“I walked toward the wreckage. I opened the door, and I looked inside,” Dr Mailiez recounts.

“Four people, two of them were apparently dead, no reaction, no breathing, and the two others, on the right side, were living but in severe condition.

“The front passenger was screaming, he was breathing. He could wait a few minutes. And the female passenger, the young lady, was on her knees on the floor of the Mercedes, she had her head down. She had difficulty breathing. She needed quick assistance.

“She was unconscious,” he continued. “Thanks to my respiratory bag […] she regained a little bit more energy, but she couldn’t say anything.”

As Dr Mailiez attempted to provide Diana medical attention, he was soon met with the flashing lights of the paparazzi swarming at the scene.

“It was a massive shock to learn that she was Princess Diana, and that she died,” Dr Mailliez said before questioning his actions at the scene.

Although the anniversary of Diana’s death resurrects those memories for Dr Mailliez, he’s admitted that flashbacks from that evening still come back each time he drives through the Alma tunnel.
