Older Australians living in New South Wales will be able to access a number of additional discounts via their free, government-issued Seniors Cards, as a range of new partners have signed up to the scheme in the south-eastern state.

Seniors in NSW will now be able to access cheaper groceries, discounted mobile phone plans and even half the cost of purchasing a new furry companion, according to Nine News.

According to the Seniors Card website, RSPCA NSW is now offering card holders a 50 per count discount if they take home one of their ‘golden oldie’ animals, which are dogs and cats aged eight and over. Seniors Card holders will therefore pay $110 to adopt a dog, instead of $220, and just $70 to take home a cat, as well as receiving a 10 per cent discount on ongoing vet fees at RSPCA hospitals.

“They can provide everything a younger animal can and still provide many years of companionship without the hard work involved in raising a younger animal,” Donna Hough, from RSPCA NSW, said.

“I have personally owned and adopted many senior pets and they have brought endless amounts of joy to my life and home. To be able to provide them with a good life in their twilight years is immensely satisfying.”

Other new partners include IGA, with the state’s 1.7 million Seniors Card holders now able to save 5 per cent when purchasing gift cards, which can then be used to buy groceries at your local IGA store. This is similar to an offer already available with Woolworths.

Seniors can save 30 per cent on all mobile plans with Pennytel, while Vodafone is offering 10 per cent off its monthly plan fees, Red Plans or SIM only deals to card holders who sign up before the end of this month.

Other new deals for NSW Seniors Card holders include 10 per cent off site-wide with Vision Direct, as well as a 30 discount on prescription lenses and 35 per cent off progressive lenses. While seniors can enjoy 10 per cent off their bill at restaurant chain Rashay’s and one free coffee per senior at selected stores.
