She’s the daughter to one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and actress Kate Hudson has her own rules when it comes to raising her children.

In a recent interview with AOL, the actress revealed that she’s decided to take a genderless approach when it comes to parenting her newborn daughter.

The 39-year-old, who is also a mother to sons Ryder, 15, and Bingham, 7, gave birth to her first daughter, Rani Rose, in October with partner Danny Fujikawa.

“[Having a daughter] doesn’t really change my approach, but there’s definitely a difference,” she told AOL. “I think you just raise your kids individually regardless — like a genderless [approach]. We still don’t know what she’s going to identify as.”

The actress added: “I will say that, right now, she is incredibly feminine in her energy, her sounds and her way. It’s very different from the boys, and it’s really fun to actually want to buy kids’ clothes.”

There are different degrees to raising a child without a gender, but the common theme is that a child is not raised as either a boy or a girl. For some, it’s as simple as letting a child play with both “boy” and “girl” toys, while others allow children to wear clothes that reflect their identity. Others may refrain from using pronouns such as “she” or “he”.

However, despite remaining gender neutral, Kate announced her pregnancy with daughter Rani by releasing a dozen of pink balloons into the air.

Kate first announced she was pregnant again last April when she took to her social media page to reveal she was having a daughter. Stood in her garden in a pretty white dress, she was seen piercing a balloon to reveal dozens of smaller pink balloons inside.

The actress isn’t the only one introducing her children to this new way of thinking. More parents across the globe are encouraging their children to break away from gender norms and to do what makes them feel most comfortable.

In 2017, singing sensation Pink revealed she wasn’t putting any gender labels on her kids. She has a daughter, Willow Sage, and a son, Jameson moon, but said that she doesn’t believe in restricting her kids with their genetic gender.

“We are a very label-less household,” news.com.au reported the singer telling People.

“Last week Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman. I was like: ‘Great, can you teach me how to make African food?’

“And she’s like: ‘Sure Mama, and we are going to live with you while our house is getting ready’.”

The ‘What About Us’ singer also encouraged more gender-neutral bathrooms at schools and explained: “I was in a school and the bathroom outside the kindergarten said: ‘Gender Neutral – anybody’, and it was a drawing of many different shapes.”

In the same year, Target came under fire for selling two very similar products for men with two very different meanings. One play set was pink and labelled “My First Carry Along Beauty Studio”, while the blue set was labelled “My First Carry Along Medical Centre”.

Many on social media branded the toys sexist and called for them to be removed from sale.

What do you think? Should more parents be embracing Kate’s method of parenting or should they stick to the traditional ways of bringing up a child?
