We’re used to seeing Camilla step out in muted tones and pastels, but the future Princess consort mixed it up for a day out on official royal business this week – and her bold new colour scheme certainly suits her.

The Duchess of Cornwall, 70, looked sensational in purple as she attended an event for the Royal Society of Literature in London on Wednesday, ditching her usual overcoat for a light shirt and skirt to combat the warm weather.

Camilla cut a stylish figure in the purple top-and-skirt combo, which featured an eye-catching pattern and was cut just above the knee. She completed the ensemble with a sensible pair of nude-coloured court shoes and accessorised with simple silver jewellery.

Interestingly, the colour purple has been associated with royalty, power and wealth for centuries. In fact, it is said, Queen Elizabeth I, forbad anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it.

The duchess gave a speech at the event and signed the guest book with a pen used by poet T.S. Eliot at the evening reception, which was held at The British Library.

A keen advocate for the importance of reading and writing, Camilla is patron of several organisations that promote and support literacy, including the National Literacy Trust, Book Trust, First Story, the Wicked Young Writer Awards and Beanstalk.

Last week, Camilla stepped out in her favourite polka-dot dress as she visited the UK town of Salisbury with Prince Charles. The 70-year-old Duchess beamed at crowds of well wishers, who had lined the streets in the hope of greeting the heir to the throne and his wife, as they met with local soldiers, school children and business owners during the visit.

Camilla previously wore the dress for the annual Women of the Year Lunch in October last year, proving it is one of her go-to favourite outfits for special occasions.
