Princess Mary’s husband Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark has been forced to cancel official engagements as he’s hospitalised.

The 50-year-old has been forced to put all his royal engagements on hold following surgery for a back problem. The Danish palace released a statement informing fans around the world that he’d temporarily stopped all work commitments, and confirmed the operation occurred on Sunday.

“His Royal Highness The Crown Prince was operated yesterday for a herniated disc at the hospital,” a statement read.

A herniated disc doesn’t always show symptoms, however, it can be extremely painful. It usually impacts the rubbery cushions or discs between the bones of the vertebrae in the spine.

According to the statement, the operation was conducted and went to plan and the Prince was discharged from hospital on Monday. Meanwhile, Princess Mary has continued her royal duties and was spotted attending an event on Monday at the Copenhagen business school.

Fans were quick to send their well-wishes to the royal.

One person on Facebook wrote: “Good recovery to the Crown Prince.”

Another message read: “I wish HRH Crown Prince Frederik good recovery and he is soon on his legs again.” A third added: “Healing thoughts and energy.”

It’s not the first time Prince Frederik’s back has caused him problems. According to People magazine, the Prince experienced a spinal fracture in 2016 after a trampoline accident. Following that incident, a palace spokeswoman confirmed he had cracked a bone in his cervical spine, located in the neck.

His operation comes just days after he was spotted out and about in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen with wife Mary, French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.

The week earlier, he joined his family including 11-year-old Princess Isabella, seven-year-old Princess Josephine, seven-year-old Prince Vincent and 12-year-old Prince Christian for some family fun on the Faroe Islands.
