Jelena Dokic shows off amazing weight loss after pushing scales at 120kg

Tennis star Jelena Dokic has revealed her amazing weight loss transformation after struggling to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle post retirement.

The Croatian-born 35-year-old, who hung up her racquet in 2014, bravely took to social media this week to share before and after photos of her incredible weight loss journey.

For the past five months Jelena has been toughing it out with a healthy eating overhaul and dedicated exercise regime in hopes of losing some extra kilograms gained through years of emotional eating following her exit from the professional tennis circuit.

In a post shared on Instagram, the former world number four, detailed her journey which has helped her to gain confidence once again.

“I thought I would brave the judgement, negativity and scrutiny that sometimes comes with being in the public eye and on social media and put myself and my struggles out there and hopefully inspire, motivate and help others, especially women,” she wrote alongside three photos of herself from the beginning of her weight loss challenge in October 2018 to a current snap from this month.

“The photo on the left and the start of my weight loss journey is a hard one to post and look at. I was unhealthy and unfit but even more importantly I was so unhappy, with no confidence. I didn’t want to go out of the house and I even turned down work opportunities because I was so insecure and unhappy.”

Jelena went on to explain how much weight she had lost in the short space of time and how much she is looking forward to the future.

“While I don’t want to talk about the kilos too much, I have lost almost 20 kilos between the 2nd and 3rd picture alone,” she added. “I hope I can inspire you and motivate you all. No matter what you are trying to achieve, IT CAN BE DONE.

“I am halfway in my weight loss journey and very excited about what is ahead.”

Speaking out about her journey to date, Jelena explained during a recent interview that she is aiming to hit 66kg, almost halving her heaviest weight of 120kg. The tennis coach and commentator told the Herald Sun there were many factors that contributed to her weight gain including the physical and mental abuse from her father Damir, along with metal health battles, a thyroid condition and glandular fever.

“I was thrown into retirement not knowing what direction I wanted to go in,” she said. “When you’re a professional athlete, you’re in this bubble that’s not reality – everything is done for you … training, food, travel, management, so going back into real life was very different.”

Since posting the photo of her transformation on Tuesday, the tennis great has received a flurry of comments of support from fans, who commended her on her weight loss.

“You were very brave posting that first one Jelena but you must look back on it with tremendous pride. Congratulations, you are such an inspiration,” one person wrote on Instagram.

“Wow congratulations. A noticeable difference particularly in your smile. Keep up the great work,” another added.

While a third wrote: “So inspirational. You are beautiful inside and out, no matter what size you are Jelena.”
