They have continued to share a very close relationship ever since their divorce more than 20 years ago – even living together in the same Royal Lodge in Windsor – and Sarah Ferguson’s close bond with ex husband Prince Andrew has sparked years of rumours they could one day remarry.

Now, breaking her silence for the first time about the claims, 59-year-old Fergie has opened up on her close friendship with the prince in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.

“We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other,” she told the publication in her most personal chat in decades, revealing they’re happy as they are right now.

The pair – who went through a very public separation in 1992 before divorcing in 1996 – are regularly seen at public events together and recently put on a united front at their daughter Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding to Jack Brooksbank.

Remembering the special day, Fergie admitted to the news outlet that she never understood mothers who cry at their child’s weddings – but she herself broke down in tears seeing her daughter say ‘I Do’.

The wedding day brought up a lot of other memories for Fergie too, as she admitted she thought a lot of her “best friend” Princess Diana throughout. The duchess was famously very close to Diana before her tragic death.

“She’s [Diana] with me all the time. What I miss most is her tinkling laughter,” she added. “Diana was my best friend and the funniest person I knew. She had such timing and wit. It was a total joy to be with her because we just laughed and enjoyed life so much, and I know she would have loved the wedding.”

Following her high-profile divorce from Andrew, Fergie has been banned from spending Christmas with the royal family ever since – while her daughters both attend each year.

However, asked if it hurts her to have to spend it alone, she insisted to the news outlet that it’s never been an issue – as she likes to share them with the Queen.

In fact, while there have been rumours over the years of her having feuds with the royals following her difficult divorce, Fergie only had lovely words to say about each of them and revealed her happiness at being invited into every aspect of her daughter’s wedding so warmly by both the Queen and her husband.

She also shunned claims that Camilla was avoiding the wedding on the day and defended her decision to honour a prior engagement on the day – revealing they are both very close.
