Kerri-Anne Kennerley’s sewing hack for wheelchair-bound husband

A sewing hack has made life a lot easier for Kerri-Anne Kennerley and her husband John, following his freak accident two years ago that left him fighting for his life.

In May of 2016, the couple faced one of their toughest challenges when then-75-year-old John suffered severe spinal injuries after falling from a balcony at a golf course. Fracturing his C3 and C4 vertebrae, the courageous man was left an incomplete quadriplegic and bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Kerri-Anne has since dedicated her life to caring for John full time and recently told Stellar Magazine, she’s had to come up with quick tricks and household lifehacks to make things a little easier on the pair of them. 

“Since John’s accident, it’s been difficult to get him dressed,” she said. “So I came up with the idea of cutting a big slit up the back of his shirts and jackets.”

Laughing at her invention Kerri-Anne said: “He was horrified of course, but it’s so much easier to get one arm in, pull the shirt across his front and insert his other arm. No one can see the split because his back is pressed against his wheelchair.”

Homemade inventions are often a lot cheaper, useful and fashionable, with Kerri-Anne’s easy sewing fix making life that little bit easier for the still loved-up couple.

Married for 34 years, Kerri-Ann and John first met in New York in 1979, and although they haven’t had it easy with a miscarriage in 1988, Kerri-Anne’s breast cancer battle and John’s terrifying accident, they have proven that love never dies.

Described by John as “brilliant”, Kerri-Anne, 64, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame at last year’s Logie Awards, looked elegant and graceful as she posed in a beige trench coat for the Stellar Magazine shoot.

The former TV host also revealed to Stellar that she lied about her age for years, but was now looking forward to entering her late 60s.

“I lied about my age for so long, even I couldn’t remember how old I was,” she joked. “When you’ve had breast cancer, it’s good to be celebrating a birthday.”

Still in the spotlight, Kerri-Anne currently divides her time working for the Seven Network in advertising, brand ambassadorships and corporate hosting with work for cancer charity Look Good Feel Better.

As for John’s condition, the pair are awaiting the arrival of US company Project Edge’s groundbreaking neorostimulation program to Australia with hopes some improvements could be made.
