Finger buns are a childhood favourite that evoke memories of treats from the canteen or a quick trip to the bakery after school.

And now travel company Wotif has anointed a Sydney bakery with the “yummiest” bun in Australia.

The team at Humble Bakery faced stiff competition from bakeries across the country but came out on top in Wotif’s Uniquely Aussie Awards, 2024, winning their Best Sweet Bun prize.

The Surry Hills bakery won over judges with their not-so-humble bun filled with dried fruits, gourmet butter and topped with pink, cream cheese icing.

The bakery shared their delight on social media and were honoured to win an award that shone a “light on things” that were “iconic to Australians.”

“Our finger bun is a fresh take on the old classic, made with top-quality ingredients and a generous slab of butter,” they wrote on Instagram.

“We wanted to bring back the nostalgic joy of getting a finger bun from a small-town or local bakery when you were a kid.”

After the victory, heartfelt congratulations poured in from dessert lovers across the country.

“My favourite bun,” one fan wrote.

“Yummo!! I used to love them at the school canteen, back in the day, but yours sound next level. Might need to pop in next time we are in Sydney! Congratulations,” another added.

“We need to bring back the lunchtime sandwich.”

Speaking to 9honey Kitchen Humble co-owner Ben Millgate said the things that set their bun above the competition was their ingredients and freshness.

“Our frosting is made with cream cheese, unlike most finger buns that use Boston icing,” he said.

“And of course, they’re made fresh daily, complete with a generous slab of butter.”

But it was also their ratio of icing to bun that made them a firm favourite on social media.

“A great bun has the perfect ratio of topping to bun and our generous slab of butter takes it to the next level. Anything less than this makes for a disappointing finger bun,” Millgate said.

“It’s always nice to see that people love and enjoy what we do.”

If sweet buns are not your thing, then another bakery in South Australia might salivate your tastebuds with their award-winning vanilla slice.

Banana Boogie Bakery has elevated the classic vanilla slice to new heights, earning the title of Australia’s Best Vanilla Slice at this year’s Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph competition.

After evaluating taste, texture, and presentation, the judges awarded Banana Boogie’s vanilla slice the title of the country’s best.

Not only can Banana Boogie Bakery now boast the title of the best vanilla slice, but it also claims the honour of having the best sausage roll in the country. This accolade was earned earlier this year at the Baking Association of Australia (BAA) South Australian Baking Show, where 49 bakeries and 247 delectable products competed for the coveted title.
