It’s not every day you get to upstage a monarch, but one tiny well-wisher had a hilarious reaction to meeting King Charles during his latest royal engagement.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, King Charles III visited RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, to present the 42 Torpedo Bomber Squadron with a new Standard and learn more about the Royal Air Force bases’ capabilities. Following his mother before him, King Charles is then expected to spend part of the summer months in Balmoral, the beloved Scottish estate of the British royal family.

Wearing his Marshal’s uniform with the Order of the Thistle insignia – Scotland’s highest order of chivalry – King Charles then delivered a speech, met crew and guests and toured an elite P-8A Poseidon aircraft before chatting with local children and their families from the Airplay Youth support program, who live on or near the base.

While most audience members were pleased to meet the 76 year old sovereign, one baby in the audience cried while his mother chatted with the bemused king.

Footage of the amusing interaction was captured and showed King Charles appearing to make light of the situation, that made everyone around him smile.

During his speech, King Charles reminisced on his time at Gordonstoun school that was nearby and talked about the honour of visiting the base, which is the UK air force’s only main operating base in Scotland and one of just two stations that guard the U.K. airspace for 24 hours a day.

“It gives me the greatest possible pleasure to be here with you all today to mark the standing up of 42 Torpedo Bomber Squadron, and to present you with your new Standard. I am especially pleased to be doing so here at R.A.F. Lossiemouth, the beating heart of the United Kingdom’s long range maritime patrol aircraft capability, and an air station at the end of whose runway my old school, Gordonstoun, is situated!” he said.

“In the 1960s, it was the Royal Navy’s Buccaneer aircraft that took off and landed over us and, as part of the Cadet Corps, we regularly used to train or be trained by personnel on the station.”

The visit comes after Charles gave a rare and reassuring update on his health as he continues treatment for cancer, much to the relief of family and royal watchers alike.

While meeting crowds in Newmarket, alongside Queen Camilla on July 22, Charles spoke about how he was feeling in a conversation with cancer survivor Lee Harman.

“I asked him how he was, and he said he was feeling a lot better now and that it was ‘just one of those things,’ ” Harman told PA, as per Hello! magazine.

Harman also shared his own experience with cancer with the Monarch.

“He asked me how I was, and I said, ‘I’m all good, I got the all clear from cancer last year,’ ” Harman said.
