The late Prince Phillip was known for his blunt sense of humour as well as his duty to Queen and country.
The late Duke of Edinburgh became the longest-serving consort in the history of the British monarchy, but while some may cringe at his gaffes, one royal reporter has recalled a saucy joke that revealed a tender side to Philip and the love he had for the Queen.
Former BBC royal reporter and author Jennie Bond made the revelation while recalling the love lives of the Royal Family in an interview with The Mirror.
Though from the outside, their marriage seemed comforting and uneventful, Philip’s cheeky response to a compliment about the Queen revealed a passionate basis to their union.
“I remember once, someone complimented the Queen on her beautiful soft complexion and Philip cheekily said, ‘Yes, and she’s like that all over, you know!’” Bond told the British publication.
While the couple would go on to face a number of challenging years together, “their love, just grew and grew through their 70 years together,” according to the former BBC reporter.
“He was a very handsome young man when they met, a naval cadet in uniform, tall, blond, a Greek god, really,” Bond said.
“She loved him, and I think he loved her very much.
“It was a romance that endured until the very end.”
Many fans of the late Duke would not be surprised by the disclosure as another British royal had shared heartwarming details about him during the BBC documentary, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers.
Princess Eugenie recalled a touching moment when she introduced her then newborn son, August, to Prince Philip.
“We named August, August Philip because grandpa had been such a huge, inspiring character in my life,” she said.
“I brought little August to come and meet him and told him that we’d named him after him and it was such a lovely moment. We were very lucky to do that.”
Beyond the name, Princess Eugenie reminisced about a thoughtful wedding gift bestowed upon her by her grandfather on her special day in 2018. Prince Philip, known for his various hobbies, including a lesser-known love for painting, gifted Eugenie a handmade painting of flowers.
“It was so nice, it’s now sitting in my house in London and I’m so proud of it, you know?” she said.
