The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital after “feeling unwell”, Buckingham Palace said. Prince Philip, who is 99, was admitted to the King Edward VII hospital in London, on Tuesday evening.
“The duke’s admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of [his] doctor, after feeling unwell,” the statement, obtained by The Guardian, said. “The duke is expected to remain in hospital for a few days of observation and rest.”
Meanwhile, a palace source told news outlet the BBC the prince, who is due to celebrate his 100th birthday in June, was in “good spirits” in hospital. It’s also been reported by multiple news outlets that the illness was not Covid-related.
The news comes just a few weeks after Prince Philip and Her Majesty had their first dose of the Covid vaccine.
This isn’t the first time the prince has been rushed to hospital. Philip was last in hospital just before Christmas in 2019. At the time, palace officials said he was in for treatment of a pre-existing condition.
“The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition,” a statement from the royal family said at the time.
