Pippa Middleton, 37, and husband James Matthews, 45, welcomed their second child in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The baby girl comes about 2.5 years after the birth of the couple’s first child, Arthur.

Grace Elizabeth Jane was born at 4.22am on Monday, March 15, weighing 6lbs, 7oz (about 3kg). The newborn shares a middle name with her Aunt Kate, who was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, and also shares the name of Kate’s grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth.

Pippa’s daughter’s second middle name is Jane, which is a tribute to James’ mother (Pippa’s mother-in-law), Jane Matthews.

A family spokesperson confirmed the news, just hours after the birth. “Mother and baby are doing well,” the source said. “She’s perfect. Everyone is overjoyed at such a happy arrival.”

Kate and Prince William are reportedly also thrilled by the arrival, after a particularly turbulent month in the royal family. “The Duke and Duchess are absolutely overjoyed by the happy news,” a source close to the couple told People.

Pippa and James, a former professional racing driver, tied the knot in 2017 at St. Mark’s Church in Englefield and welcomed Arthur in St Mary’s Hospital in London in October 2018. It appears Pippa is following in her big sister’s footsteps, as this was the same hospital where Kate gave birth to all three of her children.

Pippa has kept particularly quiet on the pregnancy since being seen sporting a baby bump in London in December last year. In fact, Pippa never publicly confirmed the pregnancy, with the news only confirmed earlier this month, when her mother Carole shared her daughter’s exciting new in an interview with Good Housekeeping UK.

“I hope to see more of my family than I could last year, including, of course, my new grandchild,” Carole said in the interview. In the interview, the grandmother of  five opened up about being a “very hands-on” gran to Kate’s children – Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2 – as well as Pippa’s son Arthur, 2.

Pippa, who is known to keep her personal life private, did however give an insight into her life as a mother in her 2019 blog for Waitrose Weekend. “Now that Arthur is 11 months old and more mobile, I have been trying to come up with different activities to do with him,” Pippa wrote in her column. “I needed to find something more than just park walks in the pram. Our local baby gym has been a saving grace. It’s a big space full of fun, soft objects, playmats, stairs, balls, swings, mini trampolines and more to stimulate and physically engage babies and toddlers.”

Baby Grace is the fifth grandchild for Pippa’s parents and another cousin for Prince William and Kate’s three children.
