In a sign that things are getting back to normal for the royals, King Charles III has led the UK in a two-minute silence for fallen service personnel in central London while supported by Princess Catherine.
After the two-minute silence, buglers played the Last Post and the King laid a wreath of poppies at the base of the Cenotaph while Prince William, 42, left his own floral tribute featuring the Prince of Wales’ feathers and a new ribbon in Welsh red.
The Princess of Wales, also 42, watched on from a balcony of the nearby Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. It marks her second official royal engagement since completing her cancer treatment in early September.
Catherine would normally be joined by Queen Camilla, who was absent as she recovered from a chest infection.
The event marked the beginning of Remembrance Sunday UK, where the monarch lead senior royals, political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and envoys from the Commonwealth countries in laying wreaths at the Cenotaph memorial which serves as the focal point for honouring the nation’s war dead.
The service is held simultaneously across the UK in memory of the dead on the second Sunday of November to mark the signing of the armistice to end World War I “on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918.
Queen Camilla was unable to attend the service and was at home recovering from a chest infection.
The event shows the royal family is slowly returning to normalcy at the end of a year in which the family faced enormous challenges including its two most popular royals sidelined by cancer.
Catherine who made her first post-diagnosis public appearance during the monarch’s birthday parade in June, is slowly returning to public duties, while the King has been in good form since recently completing a trip to Australia and Samoa where he paused his cancer treatment under strict medical supervision.
We can hopefully look forward to more royal engagements as Prince William told well-wishers his wife was doing “really well” following her treatment for cancer.
William offered the rare update as he prepares to host the annual awards ceremony for his multi-million-dollar Earthshot Prize in South Africa.
While Catherine was unable to accompany William on the trip due to her ongoing recovery, William said she would be cheering him on from home.
“She’s doing really well thanks,” he told the BBC.
“She’s been amazing this whole year. I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success.”
