He may be wired for sound and thought you were a living doll but as he looks back on his long career British pop legend Sir Cliff Richard will not tell you when he plans to retire.
In fact, Sir Cliff believes that artists who announce a grand retirement and then make multiple comeback tours have “run out of money.”
Sir Cliff 84, made the comments while discussing his career with Woman’s Weekly via the UK Express where he observed a trend among his pop star peers.
“Artists have finished, and then they make four comebacks. And every time I hear of a comeback, I think: ‘They’ve run out of money!'” he said.
“And I don’t want people to say that about me. I would rather stop. I don’t have to announce, Oh, I’ve stopped.”
Although many big acts make grand announcements about their retirement, only to jump back in the spotlight, the Young Ones crooner will take a different approach when it’s his turn.
“I can just wait a couple of years, maybe … retire for two years but don’t tell anybody and book the Albert Hall two years beforehand,” he said.
In the meantime he shows no signs of slowing down as the British pop star gears up for the Australian and New Zealand leg of his Can’t Stop Me Now tour in 2025.
Billed as “a once-in-a-lifetime experience”, fans will be offered a rare opportunity to witness one of music’s all-time greats perform timeless classics such as We Don’t Talk Anymore and Devil Woman.
Sir Cliff used his birthday in October 2024 to announce the upcoming show, telling fans he couldn’t wait to begin his tour Down Under.
“I am delighted to announce that I’m going to be on tour again in 2025 to celebrate my 85th birthday,” he began.
“You can’t stop me now because I’m going to be, on the 1st of November, back in Australia and New Zealand.”
Sir Cliff’s announcement received a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm from adoring fans, many expressing how they can’t wait to see him perform again while wishing him a happy birthday.
“Happy birthday Sir Cliff. Hope you have a wonderful day. Wow a tour. What a lovely surprise for us. Thank you so much and see you next year,” one wrote.
“I think you going to all the effort of getting to your fans over in New Zealand and Australia is amazing Cliff. They will appreciate it so much.”
“Happy Birthday Cliff. I’ve been wondering if you would do anymore tours. This is great news and I can’t wait,” commented another.
“Fantastic news.”
During his impressive career, Sir Cliff has sold over 250 million records worldwide, securing his place among the best-selling artists of all time.
