Patti Newton, 75, widow of the late Bert Newton, 83, has revealed the reason behind Bert’s death on Saturday.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Patti divulged that the main cause of Bert’s passing on the evening of October 30, 2021, was a continuous streak of complications due to successive surgeries.

“It was complications with everything”, Patti said. “When you have a leg amputated you have to be on a lot of painkillers and Bert had had, just this year alone, he’s had eight procedures, which all involved anaesthetics and that effects you pretty badly”.

Patti described the brutal impact these continuing procedures had on Bert.

“Your whole system and just everything closes down really. That was all”.

Yesterday, November 1, Patti shared that her husband of 47 years “just couldn’t do it anymore”, after battling a toe infection, which became a leg amputation. This amputation then led to Bert’s admission to a private palliative care clinic, where Bert passed, breaking the hearts of millions of fans around Australia who had grown up watching the tv legend on their small screens.

This news comes just hours after Patti publicly condemned the media storm around the news that Bert’s son Matthew Newton would not return from New York to attend his father’s funeral.

Patti explained that “the logistics of it all, and with Covid, and with everything else” prevented Matthew’s timely return.

Her comments fueled speculation that Matthew and Bert shared a difficult relationship. But Patti has banished the rumours, saying “The press are just desperate to find a little glitch into (their relationship)”.

She shared that Matthew and Bert had remained in contact over Bert’s final days, via video calls; often discussing their shared love of old Hollywood, with Matthew revisiting some of his father’s favourite anecdotes.

“He [Matthew] had the best conversations [with Bert]. They’re both into movies and things, so they talked about old movies and I think the height of the conversation was about Glenn Ford because Bert was the only one that Glenn Ford would speak to and Matthew had heard the story and he wanted to hear it again.”

“He won’t be coming. For no reason. I don’t know, I mean maybe he needs to put a statement out to stop everybody thinking that there’s a rift or something,” Patti told The Daily Mail.

The popular entertainer, who often performed alongside her late husband on hits such as The Graham Kennedy Show, put a brave face on, sharing that it was okay that Matthew would miss his father’s funeral, because it would be “a bit sad” for Matthew to come back to see his father after his father had already died.

Patti said, “I would find that a bit sad if the time that he saw him was when he wasn’t really alive.”
