As tensions within the British Royal Family continue to make headlines, all eyes are now on King Charles as he seeks to mend the deepening rift between his two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams recently shed light on the Monarch’s earnest efforts, especially with Harry’s return to England for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.
“It is a very important anniversary because service of Thanksgiving is being held, to celebrate 10 years of the Invictus Games and this of course was a remarkable thing that Harry founded,” Fitzwilliams told GB News.
However, amidst the anticipation of Harry’s return to British soil, concerns loom large over potential overshadowing given the ongoing tension.
“One of the problems is that it will be overshadowed by whether Meghan will be there, I would think not,” Fitzwilliams explained.
“And then again as to whether or not he will see his father, will King Charles play a role in peacemaking?”
The rift, Fitzwilliams notes, runs deep, exacerbated by the Sussexes’ public criticisms of the Royal Family over the past four years. Trust between William and Harry remains fragile, with William understandably wary in the wake of these attacks.
“The rift is very deep, as we all know the Sussexes for four years have attacked the Royal Family and William is naturally suspicious because he doesn’t trust Harry,” he said.
“With very good reason because of the attacks.”
Yet, amidst these tensions, Fitzwilliams highlights the unique circumstances that may pave the way for reconciliation. With both King Charles and Princess Catherine facing serious health challenges, the dynamics within the Royal Family have shifted.
“Given the fact that King Charles is undergoing treatment for cancer and given the fact that Catherine is seriously ill, preventative chemotherapy is, I should think, desperately stressful for him,” he said.
Recent reports suggest that William has been in contact with Harry following Princess Catherine’s cancer announcement, though the specifics of their discussions remain undisclosed
“The facts are, however, that we simply don’t know what’s going to happen,” Fitzwilliams noted.
“But it is possible that since King Charles has never closed the door, since they’re both his sons and since two senior members of the Royal Family are seriously ill, this presents an entirely new scenario. A new bridge.”
As the world watches with bated breath, the question remains: Can King Charles bridge the divide between his two sons and heal the wounds that have plagued the Royal Family?
