Hollywood stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have one of the longest relationships in Hollywood and are seen as an example of “couple goals” both inside and outside of La La Land.

Despite never marrying, the power couple have been together for forty years and during that time have co-starred in several movies, blended their families and welcomed a son and grandchildren into the Hawn-Russell clan.

Now the pair have revealed what keeps them together in a recent interview with E News, confessing that a good sex life was essential for maintaining intimacy and connection between a couple.

“You have to have good sex. Because sex is something that connects you and creates more belonging.” Hawn revealed.

“People who have healthy sexual relationships usually last a lot longer.”

However, the Private Benjamin star was quick to add that mutual respect was important too, saying, “You have to be nice to each other upon occasion.”

While intimacy and connection are important, Hawn stressed that couples need to remember they were also separate people who did not need to “share everything”.

“You know, you’re not the same person. You don’t think the same way oftentimes,” she said.

Russell backed up her views and said that respecting one another and enjoying each other’s company kept people together for longer.

“I just love the fact that we met and we still doing it,” he said.

“We still like being together.”

He added that, “after that many years together, you will have experienced just about everything there is to experience together and understand all the ups and downs and what it means.”

It is not the first time Hawn has discussed her long-lasting relationship with Russell which has intrigued fans and industry alike.

During an interview on CNN’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? the Overboard star opened about her and Russell’s decision to forgo marriage.

“Why should we get married? Isn’t that a better question?” she began.

“Because we have been married and because when it doesn’t work out it ends up to be a big business. Somebody has to own something. It’s always ugly,” said Hawn, who has been married twice before.

“Somebody has to actually take a look and say, ‘How many divorces are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? How many divorces make you even hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?’”
