Dame Twiggy! 1960s icon shows off wicked style as Charles bestows honour

This week marked a special occasion for 1960s model Twiggy, as she was awarded a damehood for her services to fashion, the arts and charity.

Wearing a white three-piece suit, the 69-year-old looked typically chic as she arrived at Buckingham Palace on Thursday morning for the Investiture Ceremony conducted by Prince Charles.

The former doe-eyed mod girl, whose real name is Lesley Lawson, was joined by her actor husband Leigh Lawson, 73, son Jason, 43, and daughter Carly, 41, for the momentous occasion.

Twiggy, famed for being one of the world’s first supermodels, stood out in the white power suit by designer Stella McCartney, which she teamed with matching brogues and a neutral fascinator.

The British ‘it’ girl told the Mail Online her 16-year-old self would probably “giggle” at the thought of receiving the honour.

“When we wake up every morning we turn to each other, my husband and we just giggle. So it’s a very nice, warm feeling, and obviously I am very honoured,” she said.

“I’m a very proud Brit, I feel I’m an ambassador for Britain, I always have that, because I think it’s the best country in the world and I travel the world all the time and I’m known throughout the world and, you know, being British is one of my things.”

She continued: “Officially it’s Dame Lesley but call me Dame Twiggy. I think Dame Twiggy sounds best. It’s amazing when you think of all the things I’ve done in life.”

Speaking about Prince Charles, Twiggy added: “I’ve met him before he’s really nice and he said ‘congratulations, about time you got this, we’re all thrilled for you’.”

Meanwhile, the royal family took to social media to congratulate the British icon on her achievement.

Twiggy became a global star in the ’60s, famed for her doe-eyed appearance and slim figure, but her fame didn’t end there. In 1971, film director Ken Russell cast her in the musical The Boy Friend which won her two Golden Globes and paved the way for her career on broadway.

In 1983 she made her broadway debut in the theatre production My One and Only for which she earned a Tony nomination for Best Actress. And more recently she has designed clothing and beauty ranges for British brand Marks and Spencer.
