Many of us have clothes ruined by make-up and sweat stains.

Despite our many attempts at washing and soaking, those stubborn stains won’t budge, and our clothes never look clean afterwards.

But now a Brisbane cleaning expert has come to our aid, revealing the secrets to stain free clothes over social media, and saving a bit of our sanity in the process.

Professional cleaner and organiser Leanne Neiland took to Instagram and showed how she uses hair spray and lemon juice to remove stains in seconds.

In her new video, Neiland sprays hairspray over a make-up-stained t-shirt, then places it in a washing machine to clean.

Next, she drips lemon juice over a sweat-stained white shirt, which she then adds to a washing machine. After finishing a round in the washing machine, both these garments come back stain free.

“Why does it work?” she asked.

“Hairspray can help remove makeup stains from clothing due to its solvent properties [ethanol, acetone, or glycerin] and ability to break down oils,” she explained.

“Lemon juice can help remove pit stains [those pesky yellowish stains under the arms] due to its Acidity,” she continued.

“Lemon juice is acidic, with a pH level of around 2.0. This acidity helps break down and dissolve the alkaline compounds that cause pit stains.”

Followers were impressed with the results.

“Great hacks! Have to give the lemon juice a try,” commented one.

“These tips are helpful,” wrote another.

“How good is lemon.”

“Wow, this is a lifesaver.”

But Neiland is not the only one who can bring your clothes back to their cleanest.

Style icon Donny Galella has shown how everyday household items can work wonders on those persistent makeup stains that often plague our favourite white shirts and blouses.

In a recent TikTok video, he first applies a generous amount dishwashing soap to the stained area. With enthusiasm, Galella instructs viewers, “Put a really good squirt on the stain and (using) lots of elbow grease, really work it into the fibres of the shirt, really massage it into the collar of the shirt, and you’ll see the stain lift right away.”

Next, he introduces fragrance-free baby wipes to further tackle the stubborn marks.

“I continue just to wipe the collar to collect the fibres of the shirt,” he said.

“Then I put them into the washing machine with a warm cycle.”

The results, according to Galella, are nothing short of astonishing.

“When they came out, I was pretty amazed with the results,” Galella said.

“They were pretty much almost as good as my mum’s washing.”

With their ingenious yet accessible methods, Neiland and Galella have empowered countless individuals to bid farewell to stained garments and embrace a brighter, fresher wardrobe.
