Michelle Obama put on a stunning display in a sparkly blue jumpsuit and killer heels for an event at the weekend in which she discussed the struggles women face with putting themselves first.
The former US first lady looked absolutely gorgeous in a disco-inspired jumpsuit, with her hair styled in its natural curls instead of her usual straightened hairdo, as she joined journalist Gale King on stage at the 2019 ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans, US, on Saturday.
The two women delved into some serious topics in the chat, discussing everything from Michelle’s marriage with husband Barack Obama to the challenges the former lawyer faced as the first black first lady in the White House.
The 55-year-old told Gale that people “don’t remember how many punches we took to get” to the White House.
“For a minute there, I was an angry black woman who was emasculating her husband,” she recalled about the 2008 election campaign. “As I got more popular, that’s when people of all sides — Democrats and Republicans — tried to take me out by the knees and the best way to do it was to focus on the one thing people were afraid of: the strength of a black woman.”
Since leaving office, the Obamas have largely stayed out of the spotlight, with the exception on Michelle hitting the road to promote her best-selling autobiography Becoming.
Michelle told the audience that time away from the public eye has changed their relationship and she and Barack are “rediscovering each other.”
“This is the beauty of finding a partner you really love and respect — because after all the highs and lows, the ups and downs we’ve been through, we have each other, which makes the journey worth it,” she said.
Michelle has been praised for her words of support and inspiration with many people taking to social media to express their thoughts on the former first lady and how she has impacted their lives.
“Brilliant, beautiful, proud, honest, human,” one person wrote on Instagram. “Our country is a better place because girls like my daughter and women like myself have you to look up to.”
Another commented: “Michelle Obama is absolutely one of the greatest first ladies of all time. She continues to lead and inspire young people like myself all across this country. Keep up the great work!”
While a third said: “Now this is a woman to idolise. The true epitome of excellence and class.”
