Dame Helen Mirren is known for her acting prowess, sense of humour and incredible taste in fashion, and it was the latter that was on display on Wednesday evening as the veteran actress stepped out in New York City for the premiere of her latest movie.
The 74-year-old star looked incredible in a vibrant yellow floor-length gown as she posed on the red carpet alongside a number of her The Good Liar co-stars, including Sir Ian McKellen who takes on the role of Mirren’s love-interest in the film. But while things appear tense between the pair in the trailer for the psychological thriller, the pair appear to get on extremely well as they laughed and joked in front of the cameras.
Helen stood out from her male counterparts in the stunning dress, which featured a plunging V neckline, cinched waist and long sleeves. But it was the gown’s long train that commanded the most attention as it trailed elegantly along the floor behind her as she walked the carpet.
A statement usually reserved for brides, the train appeared to be detachable from the dress, as a knee-high split could be seen running up the back of the figure hugging dress, revealing a pair of matching yellow stiletto heels beneath the skirt. It wasn’t just her shoes that Helen matched either though as the star’s clutch bag also stuck to the bright colour theme.
Allowing her stunning dress choice to do the talking, the Catherine the Great star wore her signature cropped locks in a simple bob, shaped around her face, and opted to keep her make-up simple and understated, with a hint of blush and soft pink lipstick.
Meanwhile Lord of the Rings star Ian donned a wide-brimmed Fedora style hat and a black velvet suit for the outing, making a stylish statement with a patterned scarf which he knotted at the front.
Incredibly, The Good Liar is the first movie that the iconic thespians have appeared in together. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Searle and features McKellen as ex conman Roy Courtnay, as he hatches a plan to steal Mirren’s character Betty’s fortune by creating a fake online dating profile to make her fall in love with him.
The trailer shows them coming face to face on their first date, before Mirren’s character slowly falls for him – admitting he has eased her loneliness and made her feel happy again, despite desperate warnings from her loved ones. It’s a chilling echo of a trend that has sadly seen many people across the world fall victim to real life online dating nightmares over recent years.
In the trailer, Carter’s character is heard asking McKellen’s villain: “Is that why you think you do it? For the money? It’s the game. It’s the adrenaline rush.” To which McKellen responds: “What if it is?” Mirren is later heard saying to someone off camera: “You’re becoming a very good liar.”
“Roy means to take it all,” the movie’s official synopsis explains, according to Metro. “From their very first meeting, Roy begins plying Betty with his tried and true manipulations, and Betty, who seems quite taken with him, is soon going along for the ride.”
It adds: “But this time, what should have been a simple swindle escalates into a cat-and-mouse game with the ultimate stakes – revealing more insidious deceptions that will take them both through a minefield of danger, intrigue and betrayal.”
The Good Liar is set to be released in Australia cinemas on January 23, 2020.
