Aussies love to go caravanning, with thousands of people young and old packing up their bags and travelling around the country each year. But, after a lot of exploring your caravan may start to look a little worse for wear – and perhaps even start to fall apart.
However, instead of sending it to the wreckers, there could be another use for your caravan. This week an Aussie mum took to social media and revealed how she transformed an old and run-down caravan into a perfect little space for her family. And although, it may no longer be able to travel far, it certainly looks like a nice place to relax.
Posting to Facebook group Kmart Hacks and Decor, the mum shared photos of the makeover, and explained how with a bit of elbow grease and the purchase of affordable items from popular store Kmart, she was able to transform the space. She said although it “wasn’t very crash hot” when they bought it, she now loves it.
“It’s a 1972 model so (it) would probably fall apart if you tried to tow it,” she wrote on the post. “We ripped out the kitchen inside the caravan and have a little kitchenette in the annex, with BBQ/washing up facilities outside.
“Lots of Kmart! We used the rattan vinyl contact for the doors and the wood-look contact as well. Didn’t put the legs on the rattan cupboard.” The mum added: “An on-site caravan is much easier to do up as it doesn’t move so (we) don’t have to worry about stuff being anchored down (or) travel-safe.”

And it certainly looks amazing! The old and drab looking space has been replaced with a bright and appealing area, that is sure to make anyone feel relaxed when they first walk in. Instead of dull and dark colours, the caravan interior is white, with slight pops of colour in the furniture and accessories, including a pale pink and green quilt cover.
Fellow Kmart lovers were impressed by the transformation and praised the mum for her hard work in making the caravan a nice retreat from the outside world.
“I grew up in a caravan, living in a caravan park… your caravan looks like such a lovely little home, you must be so proud,” one person wrote on the post. While another said: “Oh my god, I want this! It’s beautiful.” And a third added: “I used to have an on-site holiday caravan with annex… never crossed my mind to do that. Well done, so clever.”

Meanwhile, if you don’t have a caravan to transform, perhaps there’s something else you’d like to turn into your home. Maybe even a plane? It may sound a little bizarre, but one grandmother in the United States has done just that.
Jo Ann Ussery, a hairstylist from Mississippi, turned an abandoned Boeing 727 passenger plane into a three-bedroom dream home, complete with a hot-tub. Jo Ann was 52 when she purchased the retired plane for a measly $2,000 after her mobile home was destroyed in an ice storm. She then spent roughly $30,000 setting up and refurbishing the 42 metre-long aircraft, which she had positioned on her property with the nose jutting out over a lake to give the impression it was in flight.
While she left heating, plumbing and electrical elements to the professionals, Jo Ann completed the rest of the transformation herself, creating three bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and laundry, while retaining the plane’s original toilets and converting the luggage compartments into storage. Her home also has airconditioning, an oven, washing machine and dishwasher.
