Stylish Helen Mirren couples flattering new look with retro platforms

Helen Mirren often favours a floaty, embellished style for red carpet appearances.

Helen Mirren’s got a hot new style, and she’s working it to its fullest advantage.

The veteran actress debuted a move away from her usual embellished, floaty red-carpet gowns while at the Toronto International Film Festival, wowing onlookers with a skin-tight, grape-coloured dress. Coupled with semi-opaque tights and black court shoes with a slight platform sole, Mirren looked curvaceous, with a slightly retro touch.

Clearly the 72-year-old knows that the look flatters her hourglass figure, because she pulled it out a second time at the high-profile film festival, wearing an eye-catching mustard dress of a very similar cut and with another interesting embellishment around the neck. Retro-style red, suede platform heels finished off the look.

Refreshingly, Mirren never pretends that getting dressed up for an event where she’ll be photographed from every angle is easy. She recently posted a snap of herself on Instagram showing the three-strong team of experts it takes to do her face and hair alone, with no doubt others waiting in the wings to help her with clothing and accessories.

She’s never shy of trying different looks either, but she does stick to one tried-and-tested rule – her upper arms are always strictly under wraps in fitted sleeves.

Mirren was at the festival to at the festival to promote her movie The Leisure Seeker, in which she stars with Donald Sutherland. They play a couple called Ella and John who take their 1975 camper van on the road, as Sutherland’s character John suffers the early stages of dementia.

Do you keep your arms covered like Helen Mirren? What do you think of her more figure-hugging style?
