Amal Clooney rocks wild outfit and Beatrice goes medieval at Met Gala

She’s celebrating two huge royal weddings this year – with her sister Princess Eugenie taking the spotlight in one of them – but Princess Beatrice ensured all eyes were on her in a very vibrant dress at this year’s Met Gala.

Celebrities never fail to disappoint at the glamorous annual event in New York, hosted by Vogue magazine to celebrate the best and wildest designs in fashion, and this year was full of trains, crowns, endless colour and even some angel wings, as A-list stars embraced the Catholic theme for the evening. 

Beatrice chose a long flowing bright purple dress with a frilled collar and jewels along the top of each arm. She added a large headband, almost like a miniature crown, to the ensemble and wore dramatic eye make-up as she posed for photos outside.

She carried a small black clutch bag in one hand and wore her hair pinned back down her back.

Meanwhile, Amal stole the award for most bizarre outfit on the night, as she swapped her usual corporate look for some tight-fitting trousers and a long, floral cape-like skirt pinned to her back. The extravagant outfit finished with a huge train that fell behind her, and matched a strapless metallic top.

The 40-year-old didn’t embrace the religious theme as much as Beatrice, but instead went for full drama with large silver earrings on display, as she wore her hair swept into a glamorous bun. 

Elsewhere, former Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter enjoyed her moment in the spotlight in an elegant gold crown for the bash with matching accessories and gold clutch. 

But it was her dress that really stood out, with a turquoise-coloured large skirt and a matching small jacket, reportedly selected by stylist Ann Caruso. 

The original Wonder Woman recently addressed rumours she could appear in the 2019 adaptation of the classic superhero movie. Speaking to Megyn Kelly on the Today Show in the US, she said: “That is up to Patty Jenkins, I’ve been talking to her about it… She has given me some hints about it, and I guess it’s up to Warner Bros. if they want to spend the money.”

Also putting on a show at the Met Gala was Cindy Crawford, who turned back time in a daring bright red latex dress by Versace. She shared a photo of her floor-length number in advance, giving fans a glimpse at her age-defying figure as she posed in a doorway.

While Cindy appeared to ignore the theme for the evening, Sex and The City star Sarah Jessica Parker couldn’t have been more serious about adhering to the dress code. The actress, 53, wore a giant gold crown paired with a patterned gold gown with red hearts.

Appearing as if she’d just stepped off a royal film set, Sarah even managed to balance a flower in her hair, alongside the startling headpiece.

She had strong competition on the red carpet though, mainly from Madonna, who channelled her inner Gothic side with a full netted veil, a giant frilled black dress and a regal gold crown.

The singer wore her hair in plaits and carried a black flower in one gloved hand, once again leaving mouths agape as she sauntered past the waiting press pack. 

This year’s ball celebrates the soon-to-be-unveiled Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibit, hence the unusual theme. This year, Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace will host the bash, while long-time organiser and Vogue editor Anna Wintour will also play a part.
