The music world is in mourning following the sad news that Charles Hodges has passed away.
Better known as Chas from ‘70s band Chas and Dave, Charles passed away on Saturday, according to a statement on the band’s official Facebook page. He was 74.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our very own Chas Hodges,” the statement read. “Despite receiving successful treatment for oesophageal cancer recently, Chas suffered organ failure and passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday September 22nd.
“We would like to thank our fans for their fantastic support and goodwill at this difficult time.”
Fans have flooded Facebook with their favourite memories of the singer.
One person wrote: “RIP CHAS. had the pleasure of meeting the man. You brought pleasure to millions. Always remembered.”
Another comment read: “Had the great pleasure of meeting the extremely talented and very approachable Chas and some of his lovely family at a book signing day at a garden centre in Hertfordshire a few years ago, we chatted a lot about music and he let me film him playing his fender telecaster and singing some of the lovely songs by him and Dave, top bloke and so not flash!, RIP Chas, a true cockney legend!”
A third added: “So sad to hear this. Chas was a great chap our hearts go out to Joan and the rest of your family We have fond memories of you both and feel your sadness.”
In February last year, the musical duo made the shock announcement that Chas had been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer.

“Chas recently underwent hospital tests which revealed cancer of the oesophagus,” the statement at the time read. “Luckily this has been spotted at an early stage and he’ll be undergoing treatment immediately.”
Sadly, despite the best efforts, Chas couldn’t be saved.
Chas and Dave were known for their unique rock sound and cockney style. They were known for a string of hits including ‘Rabbit’, ‘Snooker Loopy’, ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’, ‘Tottenham Tottenham’ and ‘Ossie’s Dream’.
Chas was born in London in 1943 and music was always a huge part of his life. In addition to his with Chas and Dave, he was a member of Cliff Bennett And The Rebel Rousers. The band famously toured with the Beatles in the ‘60s, before he joined forces with Dave.
