Belle of the ball! Helen Mirren makes dazzling statement in jewelled gown

When it comes to red carpet fashion, most stars enjoy highs and lows throughout their career, but Dame Helen Mirren is a rare exception who seems to never put a foot wrong when it comes to making a style statement.

No matter the occasion, the Oscar-winning actress knows how to dress for both comfort and drama. And her most recent look was certainly the latter, as she made a dazzling appearance at the Berlin International Film Festival on Thursday evening.

The 74-year-old screen icon stepped out in a dazzling black ball gown on Thursday evening as she attended the Homage Helen Mirren Honorary Golden Bear award ceremony, which formed part of the 70th Berlinale International Film Festival.

Thursday’s event was held in honour of the dame after she was selected as this year’s recipient of the honorary Golden Bear award in recognition of her incredible career in theatre and on the silver screen.

Helen’s gown was covered in holographic jewels, which created an extraordinary display under the brights lights of the cameras as she posed on the red carpet for pictures. The sophisticated frock featured a high neckline in sheer fabric and sheer three-quarter length sleeves.

The British star paired the show-stopping gown with a simple pair of black stiletto heels and a small red clutch bag, which added a pop of colour to the dramatic look.

Earlier in the day Helen took part in a press conference at the Grand Hyatt hotel and she rocked a seriously different look for the outing, as she rocked an edgy all-black ensemble, complete with a subtle tribute to a British rock band.

The actress looked sleek and stylish for the event in an edgy black blazer with band Radiohead’s logo on the breast pocket and gold studded detailing around the collar. Paired with a plain black shirt and a pair of black tailored pants, Helen was full of confidence as she posed for pictures at the festival in Germany’s capital city.

The Good Liar actress also took the time to pay tribute to the many people who have helped her throughout her career, describing them as a “very special tribe of people,” according to ET Canada.

She said: “Workers? Yes. But also believers: in the magic and the power of storytelling. And for that belief – and a little bit of dosh – they give their all.

“So I salute all the actors, directors, assistant directors, cinematographers, producers, dolly grips, boom operators, focus pullers, continuity, best boys, grips, transport managers, on-set dressers, sparks, props, make-up artists, stand-ins, on-set painters, set dressers, dialect coaches, honey wagon drivers and craft services – oh my God, yes thank you, craft services! I dedicate this award to you all!”
