Wine of the Week: The Paramour Shiraz 2020

This month the Starts at 60 Wine Club is offering great discounts and discovery packs from some of McLaren Vale’s best independent winemakers.

The 2020 Paramour Shiraz is described by its creators as “an irresistible seductress”, with flavours ranging from “cherry cheesecake” to “almost like a spicy fruitcake”.

We chatted with John and Sarae from ShowBlock Wines, a proudly independent vineyard in McLaren Vale, South Australia, to find out what makes her siren song so tempting.

“This wine is always so stunning to me,” says Sarae, “because it always makes me think of those beautiful mocha flavours… a real nice chocolatey essence.”

“It’s unfiltered, authentic, McLaren Vale Shiraz with minimal intervention.”

“It’s really deep and dark in the glass,” adds John. “It’s got an intense colour, which comes from the 15-day on-skin fermentation. It’s picked up a lot of colour off the skins. It’s really full bodied and the aromas are beautiful.”

“It’s a 2020 vintage. A great year, because climatically it was almost textbook.”

“It’s got a great mouthfeel, so it goes well with a lot of cuisines.”

Sarae and John recommend trying it with a hearty steak, chocolate, or particularly flavoursome cheeses to get the most out of your food-wine pairing.
