Emotional Queen and Prince William visit London fire site

Queen Elizabeth and Prince William have made an emotional visit to the site of the Grenfell Tower disaster, meeting with mourners and offering comforting words to victims.

William was overheard describing the charred remains of the apartment block as “one of the most terrible things I have ever seen”, while the Queen appeared stoic as she was briefed on the recovery effort.

Dozens of volunteers have set up makeshift clothing stores and supermarkets for the victims, with Londoners coming in droves to donate to the cause.

The royal visit comes as the death toll from the fire rises to 30, but the fire department says they expect that number to grow.

“Sadly we are not expecting to find any more survivors and the operation is now one of recovery rather than rescue,” London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said, reports the ABC.

While the morning was mostly a positive experience, one man heckled the royal pair as they left the site, yelling “what about the children?”.

Despite security trying to usher him into the waiting car, William turned back and said: “I’m so sorry, I have to go but we’ll be back. We’ll be back.”

The royal appearance was much appreciated by the majority of people at the site, many of whom say they feel neglected by the government.

Prime minister Theresa May did not visit the wreckage until Friday (local time) and had to leave almost immediately as angry protesters hurled abuse at her.
